PROJECT OVERVIEW
Through exploring both residential and commercial design concepts and the research of code restraints, this project challenges a solution for either a live-work environment for a graphic designer, or a private studio for an artist. My client wanted both a space to escape and indulge into her artwork and a space to unwind and entertain guests. My design also includes a leisure space influenced by my clients interest in entertainment, technology, and media.
CONCEPT STATEMENT

The concept behind this design seeks the balance and connection between a relaxing home and a stimulating work life by allowing the clients designs to energize all spaces.
Cherokee Studio lofts, built in 2009, is designed by Pugh + Scarpa Architects and is located in Los Angeles, California. This building is inspired by the Cherokee Recording Studio, where artists like Dave Matthews, Frank Sinatra, and David Bowie recorded music, adding to the essence of the entertainment capital of the world. These lofts represent premiere "Green" design as it holds LEED Platinum Certification in mixed-use development, the only building to achieve this in California.

INSPIRATION
Inspiration stems from the industrial exterior of Cherokee Studios, as well as the sustainable architectural characteristics of the building. Aspects like an open-concept, to utilize natural light, Energy Star rated appliances, and materials/finishes to mimic traditional studio loft style apartments make up the design intent for this project. With not being able to alter existing window placement, I wanted the studio to include a glass curtain wall, allowing light in.

PROCESS
Due to live-work and egress code constraints, figuring out the layout for this space was a challenge. A lot of rearranging took place, especially with the living and bedroom spaces. Consideration of a guest bathroom on the entry level took place, but soon turned into a laundry room, allowing for a second bathroom to be in the studio. It was a goal from the beginning for the living room and kitchen to be in close-relation to each other, as well as take advantage to the high ceilings, with the studio curtain wall visible from below.

The leisure space and kitchen are conveniently placed below the high-ceilings to allow for a spacious feel. The open concept creates a smooth transition from space to space for comfortable socialization.
In order to comply with 2013 CALIFORNIA RESIDENTIAL CODE SECTIONS R310.11 & R612.2*, the bedroom suite doesn't include a door because of the lack of an egress window. Rather, it is conveniently placed with an opening adjacent to the living space, which possesses an appropriate exit door.
F, F, & E selections create a slick, industrial feel, allowing for a cohesive look, from the clients private studio, to the living areas. The open concept and curtain wall of windows on the third level makes the natural light able to pass through each space
